Nimesil Wirkstoff

Nimesulide: A Versatile Drug for Pain Relief

Understanding Nimesulide's Properties

Nimesulide is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the group of sulphonanilides. Its chemical formula is C13H12N2O5S. Nimesulide is known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties.

Mechanism of Action

Nimesulide works by selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme involved in the inflammatory process. By blocking COX-2, Nimesulide reduces the production of prostaglandins, which are key mediators of inflammation, pain, and fever.

Clinical Applications of Nimesulide

Nimesulide is approved for the treatment of a variety of conditions, including:

  • Acute pain, such as muscle sprains and strains
  • Chronic pain, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammation associated with dental and orthopedic procedures
  • Fever

Nimesulide is typically administered orally in doses of 100-200 mg, twice daily. The recommended maximum daily dose is 400 mg.

Safety and Side Effects

Nimesulide is generally well-tolerated, but it can cause some side effects, including:

  • Gastrointestinal upset
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Hepatotoxicity (rare)

Nimesulide should be used with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal ulcers or liver disease.
